Best Hot Chocolate in Boston, MA and Cambridge, MA
Flour (Harvard Square, Cambridge)
We LOVE the hot chocolate at Flour, which is made with a chocolate ganache. Try some and learn all about the chocolate they use on our Harvard Square Chocolate Tour!
Amorino (Harvard Square, Cambridge)
If you like thick hot chocolate, try the Italian hot chocolate at Amorino Gelato! It’s very rich and also comes in 10 different flavors. Our favorite thing is to order it and sip it inside their big window in Harvard Square, looking out at the snow. We visit Amorino on our Harvard Square Chocolate Tour and sample their delicious gelato among other treats.
Cacao (Newton Highlands, MA)
We used to visit Cacao when they were a new chocolate store in Jamaica Plain, and we love their roots (one of the owners’, Perla’s, family has a cacao farm in the DR.) Their hot chocolate is not to be missed, and yes they do have a vegan version — this cafe is now in Newton Highlands.
Caffe Vittoria (North End, Boston, MA)
Although our favorite item at this spot is the tiramisu, you can accompany it with Italian hot chocolate or cappuccino. This sweet drink comes with whipped cream and is thicked by corn starch. Enjoy our recommendations for the North End before or afterwards.
Burdicks (Boston)
Although they didn’t want to be on our chocolate tour, we find them too “on the beaten path” anyways! Did you know Zuckerberg had his first date with Priscilla in the Harvard location? We have been coming here for decades and even shipped their rich hot drinking chocolate mix to a friend in the Peace Corps! Pro tip: mix the dark and white chocolate for a tasty treat.
Oakleaf Bakery (Boston, MA)
Homemade marshmallows? That’s what we love! And besides their delicious cakes, their hot chocolate is out of this world! We really like their Aztec hot chocolate which is somewhat spicy. Great for a treat before or after Symphony!

Athan’s (Brookline, MA)
Hot chocolate is simply the best when it’s made with high quality chocolate, and Athan’s imports delicious chocolate. Stars sparkle outside of their cafes as you feel great energy from the urban rush of Brighton and Brookline. Cuddle up with a date or a good book and sip on.
Thinking Cup (Boston, MA)
Steps from the Boston Common, this delightful cafe is one of the best in Boston. They offer a really delicious french hot chocolate that’s thick and chocolatey – including a 64% Tainori Valhrona Drinking Chocolate. It’s like dessert in a cup!
Rancatore’s and Toscanini’s (Lexington and Cambridge, MA) + J.P. Licks (Cambridge, MA)
While they’re known for their yummy ice cream, these sister spots and also local favorite JP Licks also serve a really yummy hot chocolate — Ranc’s and Toscanini’s use delicious whipped cream and JP Licks uses their thick chocolate ganache. You can eye their ice cream cakes too!
La Saison Bakery (Cambridge, MA)
Speaking of delicious whipped cream, La Saison is one of our favorite new bakeries in Cambridge – and their yummy hot chocolate definitely hits the spot. When in a pinch, we also like the hot chocolate from nearby Cafe Nero. Altogether, we LOVE hot chocolate, and you’ll be able to try some on our winter chocolate walk in Harvard Square.
Zuzu’s Petals (Somerville, MA)
Speaking of Parisian style hot chocolate, have you been to Zuzu’s Petals yet? Served in a porcelain tea cup, you’ll enjoy a beautiful rainbow colored homemade marshmallow trio and thick, french style hot chocolate from local chocolate expert Alexandra (from gâté comme des filles). But you can’t take a photo because it’s a screen-free spot! In fact, this spot used to be City Girl Cafe which was Lizzie’s favorite restaurant in Cambridge.
Tatte (Boston, MA)
On our Saturday Boston Chocolate Tour, we visit Tatte for delicious hot chocolate. They use 66% Valrhona chocolate — and mix it with milk, so you can order it with non-dairy milk if need be which is really hard to find. They also use microfoam which is a fun topping.
